India UK Agree On Text Of Civil Nuclear deal

ndia and Britain made a deal on civilian nuclear energy cooperation. Union commerce and industries minister Anand Sharma and British Business Secretary Peter Mandelson signed this deal in London. Mr Sharma went to London to attend UK-India joint economic and trade committee meeting with Lord Mandelson.

The British minister, who visited India in December, said that he was disappointed as India did not have a nuclear deal with Britain. India has formerly signed civil nuclear deals with United States, France, Canada, Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Argentina and Namibia.

The two ministers did not reveal on details regarding the nuclear deal when questioned about the details of the deal which the both sides had finally agreed to.

Lord Mandelson announced that the subject of the agreement is a “significant advance.” He said, “We have agreed on the text of the deal on nuclear cooperation and this is a very significant advance and I look forward to that text being signed at the ministerial level before long.”

Africa Got His First Female President

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf created history in 2005 African presidential election. She made the Liberia as the first African nation to have a female president. She started a peace movement; Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace which led her to the African presidential election in which she won.

In her career, she first served as Minister of Finance under President William Tolber. Then she left Liberia and worked as senior positions at various financial institutions. After serving there, she stood in the 1997 presidential election but was placed in a second position. Afterwards she served as head of the Governance Reform Commission in 2003 to set up the deal to end Liberia’s civil war. Finally in 2005 Presidential Elections, she was elected as President.

Her supporters also call her as “The Iron Lady”. During her election campaign she said she wanted to become president in order “to bring motherly sensitivity and emotion to the presidency” as a way of healing the wounds of war.

Swiss Government To Give 10 Billion Dollars To IMF

The Swiss government enforced 10 billion dollars to the International Monetary Fund to increase its lending capacity to countries, which are under danger of the global recession. The Swiss Federal Council, the government’s executive branch, declared the support, and the final decision to administer the money deposits with parliament.

The world’s leading 20 economies, at a London summit called for states to increase the funds possible to the IMF to 750 billion dollars, an increase of 500 billion dollars, so that it can lend to states hit which are particularly seriously by the financial crisis.

Swiss Finance Minister Hans-Rudolph Merz reported a newspaper, that Switzerland, especially as an exporting nation, had concern in maintaining the financial stability of other countries. Switzerland is a member of the IMF since prior last decade but has yet to make a loan.

The Council also said Switzerland will have two seats on the new Financial Stability Board, which displaced the Financial Stability Forum as member of the new architecture designed at the time of the Group of 20 summit in an effort to increase global maintenance. Switzerland is not a member of the G20 bloc or the European Union, that is member of the international forum.

John Garang Killed In A Helicopter Crash

John Garang was Sudanese Vice President and former rebel leader and played a key role in the country’s fledgling peace deal. He was killed in a helicopter crash and found dead early Monday near Pirre, a mountainous region near the Kenyan and Sudanese borders and  it was believed to have done crash-landing. Sudanese government and the head of the SPLA announced that bad weather was the main reason behind this incident.

The 60-year-old former rebel acted as Vice President for less than a month. He was sworn in as vice president just three weeks ago. During his political carrier he performed following action:

  • He provided helpful hand in southern Sudan development
  • He raised voice against autonomy and power-sharing issues.
  • He made power-sharing agreement and a new constitution deal which helped to create a new chapter in Sudan peace

His Sudden death is considered as a major cause to end two-decades-long civil war.

Deep Impact – A NASA Mission to Study the Comets

Deep Impact was a NASA’s space probe launched on 12 January 2005. This was designed to study the composition of the comets.

The major objective of this mission was to find the answer for the following fundamental questions of a comet:

  • Composition of the comet’s nucleus
  • What depth the crater would reach from the impact
  • Where the comet originated in its formation

To determine the answers for these questions, a robotic spacecraft left the gravity well of Earth and impacted a comet. This spacecraft was 3.2 meters (10.5 ft) long, 1.7 meters (5.6 ft) wide and 2.3 meters (7.5 ft) high. It consists two solar panels, a debris shield, and several science instruments for taking accurate pictures.

Deep impact has completed four crucial phases:

  • Launch and commissioning phase
  • Cruise phase,
  • Approach phase
  • Impact phase.

Finally, on 4th July the impact process occurred successfully. After successful completion of the Deep Impact’s mission, all the queries and suspense, which was earlier uncertain of a comet, were resolved.
